Caroline is an award-winning artist based in Birmingham.
She spends most of her time as Caroline Horton & Co making her own theatre projects as a writer/performer. Recent projects include: You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy, Mess and Islands that continue to tour the UK and abroad. She is currently developing a new show All Of Me.
Her work is fun, stupid and profound - often personal – sometimes political.
She is an associate artist at Birmingham Rep and the first BBC Birmingham Writer in Residence.
Caroline also creates/performs theatre pieces for other companies (recently Penelope Retold for Derby Theatre and Tranklements for the New Vic) and often collaborates as a performer, writer, director, deviser on other people’s work.
Caroline is an experienced mentor to emerging theatre makers and companies and a regular workshop leader.
She is a writer interested in different media and has recently started writing/performing audio drama for Radio 4 (recently Paris, Nana & Me). Her new play Pandora is broadcast on Radio 4 on 14th April.
TheatrePenelope Retold created for Derby Theatre in 2014, toured nationally in 2015. "Welcome to Ithaca. Island paradise and home to Penelope. She’s married to a world famous war hero and she’s had enough of waiting quietly. Made with input from soldiers and military spouses, Penelope RETOLD is an irreverent collision of classic myth and contemporary rage. An epic, heartbreaking and fiercely playful tale of love, loneliness and the need to be free.”Tranklements created for New Vic Theatre in 2015. "It looks like the party’s over; Mercia’s nothing special and there’s nothing much to see. But dig deeper and her home is as old as the hills. As her strange story trickles out, it seems she’s just been keeping her treasures close to her chest. A funny, inspiring solo performance about home, underdogs, Midlands spirit and everything we miss.”
Caroline writes and performs audio drama and her second play for radio Pandora is broadcast on Radio 4 on 14th April. Her first piece, Nana, Paris & Me was shortlisted for the Imison Award 2014 (for Best First Play) at the BBC Audio Drama awards. Listen to a clip.
