Caroline Horton

Caroline Horton is a theatre maker, performer and writer. 

She was nominated for a 2013 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre for You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy, which also won The Stage Awards Best Solo Performer in 2010. Caroline’s second show Mess continues to tour internationally (most recently across Canada) after opening at The Traverse in Edinburgh in August 2012, where it won Best Ensemble at The Stage Awards. Mess also won an Argus Angel award and was nominated for an Offie for Best New Play. Her controversial show Islands, opened at The Bush in 2015 before transferring to the 2015 British Council Showcase at the Edinburgh Festival.

Caroline wrote and performed Tranklements for the New Vic and Penelope RETOLD for Derby Theatre, which toured nationally in 2015. Her first radio play for BBC Radio 4, Paris, Nana & Me was shortlisted for the 2014 Imison Award; Pandora followed in April 2016 and her third has just been broadcast. She also wrote on series 3 of award-winning series Tracks. Caroline regularly collaborates with other companies as a deviser, performer, writer and director. She also mentors artists and companies and leads workshops. Caroline developed a short play as part of the Royal Court Writers’ Group in 2015 and in 2016 became the first BBC Birmingham Writer in Residence, working across radio and TV dramas produced in the city, leading to a recent stint writing for the long running series Home Front

In 2016, she received a Collaborative Research Award from The Culture Capital Exchange for a project interrogating narrative and meaning-making across different art forms. Caroline recently received an AIDF Arts Council grant to travel to Australia to promote her work. She is currently Creative Fellow at Birmingham University’s Shakespeare Institute, teaching undergrad and MA students and developing a new piece with Amerah Saleh at The Other Place (RSC) and touring her first show for young people, Muckers, with the egg, Bath and Conde Duque, Madrid.
