Contender Charlie and China Plate present

Romeo and Juliet - Mad Blood Stirring

By William Shakespeare
Adapted by Nick Walker

Made for 9 – 13 year olds, by the team behind Macbeth - Blood Will Have Blood.

“I genuinely thought I could end the trouble once and for all. But I got in too deep. And it all ended badly.

I am the Friar. God forgive me.”

A troubled Friar rushes us through the mutinous streets of Verona, plunging us into a community torn apart by prejudice, conflict and violent crime.

Gripping story-telling, live music and striking visual effects take young audiences on a heart-wrenching journey as they follow Shakespeare’s star crossed lovers towards their tragic end.

Guided through Shakespeare’s original text by the Friar, speaking modern English, this is an unforgettable introduction to his devastating love story.

Commissioned by Warwick Arts Centre, Z-arts, Oxford Playhouse and The Core at Corby Cube. Supported by The Albany.

Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, The Sir Barry Jackson Trust and Backstage Trust.

Schools performances, workshops, CPD and online resources are available for KS2 & KS3 (Years 5 to 8). Further info below.

Education Package

This performance and education programme created by Contender Charlie, one of the UK’s foremost theatre education companies, offers teachers and students the opportunity to enhance their theatre visit through an onstage workshop, teacher CPD and online resources.

Cross curricular links: English, PSHE, Drama, Citizenship.

Following the performance, students return to the theatre to meet & talk with the characters. Using Contender Charlie’s ‘mythodrama’ technique – a form of experiential learning successfully used for over ten years – the workshop focuses on emotional and creative development, helping students become more effective at understanding their own emotions, motivations and values.

An interactive online resource will be available to all participating schools, aiming to give practical activities to enrich the theatre experience and support on-going learning opportunities in the classroom. Designed to be used on a classroom whiteboard, this resource will provide a comprehensive range of creative, discussion and written based activities to be used with full classes following the theatre visit.

A twilight CPD session will be organised at each theatre venue prior to the performance, which will cover how to use the online resource with confidence and inform teachers how to utilise Contender Charlie’s ‘mythodrama’ approach in their classrooms.

Teachers will also be offered practical and creative support in preparing their children for the forthcoming production and workshop.
