The murder of George Floyd in May 2020 shook the world and saw the Black Lives Matter movement call even more urgently for change. In response, in June 2020, China Plate began an ongoing process of evaluation, planning and action around our Equality and Diversity Policy.

It was then we decided to become an anti-racist organisation. This challenged us in the best possible way and led us to think about how we engage with our work, the industry and communities differently. While grappling with understanding what type of action was needed internally, we have also engaged with the region-wide programme that Culture Central led through the summer of 2020, which resulted in the More than a Moment Pledge.

This pledge represents a significant milestone in the West Midlands Arts sector, encouraging radical, bold and immediate action, to dismantle the systems that have for too long kept Black artists and creatives from achieving their potential in the arts and cultural industries.

It is with huge pride that we sign and commit, together with more than 50 organisations, to ensuring equity, investment in and opportunities with and for Black artists and creatives. We endeavour to be part of the change we all need to see.
