Thanks It Is Over

Two people sat on the floor crossed legged. One of them is speaking into a microphone, the other is wearing a large yellow ball on their head which has a face drawn on it.
Two people performing, one is crouched down holding a microphone, the other is lying on the floor wearing a mask.

Thanks It Is Over

Co-created by Caroline Horton & Alex Swift

This is goodbye.

This is moving on.

After a 25-year collaboration, some awards and quite a lot of mental illness, Caroline Horton and Alex Swift are done with theatre.

It’s become apparent that it’s entirely unsustainable for them, their partners, their children, their mortgages and so on. The costs are (in many different ways) too high.

Like most other people they know, they’ve recently realised they’re neurodivergent, which explains some of what’s gone on up to this point. Anyway, think of this as a funeral – or a wake – of sorts.

A sane new chapter is beginning.

But as the lights go down, as they say their goodbyes, the pair start to hold on. They find themselves holding on to the precious alternate reality of their weird rehearsal rooms and their neurodivergent friendship – because these things have offered them an escape from the world but also a way to be in the world.

Thanks It Is Over explores what it is to create spaces of safety and creative possibility, of neuroqueerness and hope in the face of a world that often feels indifferent and hostile.

Normally Caroline is on stage and normally Alex is directing. But this time they’re negotiating what it is to share the onstage space with each other. There will be music and monsters and some madness.

Thanks It Is Over is a new piece of theatre produced by China Plate. For more information, please email Abbie White on [email protected]

More Information

In October 2025, Caroline Horton and Alex Swift spent a week at Staatstheater Mainz as part of their Mainz Residenz program to begin an initial exploration into the concept and design of the piece. This week included attending the Grenzenlos Kultur Theater Festival – Germany’s longest running disability arts festival hosted at Staatstheater Mainz.

We are looking to continue developing the show in Autumn 2026 – Autumn 2027. If you are interested in finding out more information on Thanks It Is Over we have a short overview document which can be downloaded below, or you can contact our Producer Abbie White on [email protected].
